About

The Bronx Defenders (BXD) is a public defender non-profit office that represents low-income New Yorkers in criminal, family, immigration, and civil legal matters. Each year, we defend more than 20,000 low-income Bronx residents in criminal, civil, child welfare, and immigration cases, and reach thousands more through our community intake, youth mentoring, and outreach programs.

  • Legal Representation

The Bronx Defenders is the primary provider of legal representation for parents in Article 10 and related family court cases in Bronx Family Court as well as for parents who are facing investigations by the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). Each year, BXD provides representation to more than 3,000 parents who have family court cases or are facing ACS investigations and are at risk of family separation. If the police or ACS has contacted you and you do not have a lawyer, immediately call our legal emergency hotline at 347-778-1266 or come to our office at 360 161st Street, Bronx, New York.

  • Policy & Advocacy

In addition to representing parents in Family Court, the Bronx Defenders assists parents by 1) providing advice and, if needed, direct advocacy to parents who are under investigation by ACS or at risk of investigation ("early defense") ; 2) providing Know Your Rights information to the communities most impacted by ACS; and 3) full representation to parents who have indicated cases on the State Central Register database to help them clear their names so that they can obtain employment through administrative reviews and hearings.
