Pregnancy Justice
About
Pregnancy Justice advances and defends the rights of pregnant people, no matter if they give birth, experience a pregnancy loss, or have an abortion. We advance our mission in four ways: by providing criminal defense, by advocating for legal and policy change, by publishing cutting-edge research, and by equipping partners in the field with analysis, training, and narrative framing. We believe that the criminal legal system and the family policing system, commonly known as the “child welfare system,” should never be involved in pregnancy and pregnancy-related outcomes and that all people are entitled to dignity, equality, and respect.
We work nationally and are here to help if you or someone you know is facing pregnancy criminalization. As the oldest organization in the US doing this work, let us put our expertise, experts, microphones and support in service to your case.

Legal Representation
We provide direct criminal representation for people who are criminalized because of their pregnancies or pregnancy outcomes (miscarriage, stillbirth and abortion). Where that criminalization overlaps with family policy, we are also involved in those cases.

Policy & Advocacy
We work collaboratively with advocates, organizations, and policymakers at the state and federal levels to advance pregnant people’s rights. We fight unjust policies that fuel pregnancy-related prosecutions, and we fight for legislation that centers pregnant people’s needs. We provide allies and activists with analysis of proposed legislation and policies, help develop model legislation, and comment and testify on proposed laws across the country. We also conduct research around pregnancy criminalization to ensure that we are tracking how pregnancy criminalization directly impacts people.
